House of the Week: Inside a hidden inner-city pad that’s like being in an urbane cocoon

For those of you playing along at home, you might have noticed that Richmond has been flavour of the month here of late. To be specific, Cremorne has been pinging on our property radar; to hone it even further, this little block, bordered by mighty Punt Road, Swan Street and the Yarra, has thrown up a couple of ripper pads recently.

We find our spot this week only a block or so east of Punt Road with terrific green views over Gosch’s Paddock as well as the twinkling lights of AAMI Stadium and the mighty MCG.

You’ve got to wind your way in deep to find Huckerby Street but, when you do, this very handsome place is a stylish reward.

Once you’re inside it’s like being in a very urbane cocoon. Timber-lined walls, ceilings and floors might seem overstated, but here it’s the coherence of the design that provides the appeal. Bespoke black metal trim on the door frames, windows and balustrades serve to underscore the sophisticated heft.

Along the north side of the ground floor there’s a study space and hideaway laundry, while at the rear there’s a bedroom with en suite and bright courtyard.

Take the stair, or the lift, to level one and the fabulous linear space of the living/dining/kitchen area. This long, breezy footprint is wonderful. Set to the rear, the kitchen is all cool style with marble island and benches and plenty of integrated storage.

The fine-looking living room rolls out to a balcony with just a hint of those lovely views.

On the top level are two bedrooms, which boast marble en suites with chic black tapware, but it’s the front bedroom that’s the crowning glory. The brilliant balcony opens out onto the sporting precinct of Melbourne; this is without doubt a magnificent pocket of our town.
